GEOLOGICAL SITES
IN
NEW SOUTH WALES

 

 

REFERENCES:   A study of the geological heritage of New South Wales was carried out in the 1970s and 1980s.   The results are recorded in the following three volumes:

 

Volume 1 - by Ian G. Percival in 1979, which documented 47 sites.

Volume 2 - by Brett Stevenson in 1981, which documented 33 sites.

Volume 3 - by Richard W. Schon in 1984, which documented the remainder.

 

Copies of these volumes may be found in many public librarires, such as at the NSW State Library (Mitchell Library section) at Macquarie Street in Sydney.

A listing of the 156 suggested significant sites, that was compiled from varied sources, is found in volume 1.  The more significant sites were visited and documented in the 1979-1984 study.

The securing of funding for such documentation work occurred following certain recommendations made in the 1974 "Hope Report" on the National Estate (Report of Committee of Enquiry).

Criteria of significance that were considered during compilation and documentation of geological sites included the following:

 
  • Importance to science (e.g. type and reference localities),
    •  
  • Educational utility (e.g. good excursion localities),
    •  
  • Recreational or tourist potential (e.g.the phosphate mine at Wellington Caves has been turned since then into a major tourist and educational facility),
    •  
  • Aesthetic appeal (e.g. Bungonia Gorge and many other places),
    •  
  • Rarity or fragility or endangerment (with special attention to any sites under perceivable or known threat),
    •  
  • Sites of historical significance (including mining history in particular).


The sites compiled in the three volume study of NSW geological sites are listed below.  The volume and page number is given for each site documented.
