The Steiner family of Wagga Wagga etc.

( Ancestors of Doreen Phyllis Byrnes )

The following information is rudimentary, written soon after Doreen's death, and before any opportunity to seek additional information on the Steiner family past, particularly from cousins who are Steiners (and who may have traced the family back within Europe).   Or if anybody else recognises this family and can give additionial information it would be appreciated if sent to John Byrnes at john.mail "at" ozemail.com.au

It is known that my grandfather's (Doreen's father's) grandfather Christian Steiner came from Germany in approx. 1857 and that he died in Wagga Wagga in 1893.

It is assumed that at this stage the family probably spoke German as Christian married Elizabeth Rheinhardt who also came from Germany.  The marriage was at Mulgoa, in the Nepean valley west of Sydney, in 1858.

Leonard, son of Christian and Elizabeth, was born at Camden in 1867, which suggests that the family may have relocated to further up the Nepean valley from the Mulgoa area by then.  The Camden area also happens to be where the Clout family, of Doreen's other main ancestry line, also lived at that time but this is likely just coincidental.  There is no thought that families knew each other and in any case the Clout descendant line which would later join with a Steiner descendant line at Wagga Wagga had left Camden area, heading south to Junee, in 1865.

It seems equally possible that the Steiners had not moved from Mulgoa to Camden area specifically, but just that they moved around a good deal, since Leonard's various siblings were born in Mulgoa, Winbourne, Westbrook, and (?)Albert Lake [unknown place].

Later on the family moved to Wagga Wagga and Leonard married Ellen Taylor there.  This is where Doreen's father Cecil was born in 1890.

Cecil was the eldest of seven children.   His mother Ellen Taylor's background is that she was born in Pyalong, Victoria.  Her English father, William Taylor, had came from Cambridge and was a shoe maker. Ellen's mother, Eleanor Curtis, was born in Williamtown, Melbourne.

MORE - NB:  All the above words were written shortly after Doreen's death.   Since that time (2007) considerably more information on Steiners family has come to light.   That has happened from ongoing enquiry and search, and also because ever advancing quantities of old newspapers are now being scanned and OCR'ed (digitally translated), bringing back into general view and ready readability a vast amount of information on the past.   It is suggested to begin, re further information, with steiner-stories-index.htm

~ A recommendation of Trove ~

"Trove" in 2010 provided a 'new crop' of fresh info bits for Steiners at

Wagga Wagga, not all of which has been woven in here yet.

Trove is highly recommended.
